What is your Question?

And where will it take you?

In the dark of the new moon.
I found myself.
A gift had been offered.
A box left at my doorstep.¹

The box was small and fit in the hollow of my hand.
I lifted the lid with some trepidation.
As if, in doing so.
I was agreeing to an adventure I knew nothing about.
Within was a key.
And a note.

Before we move forward, let me tell you something.
I have dreams that arrive every few years.
Of my house having more space than I ever realized.
And a room that is a spiral.
Winding into a sanctuary.
I had one of these dreams the other night.

The note within said, “Enter.”
The note said, “It is yours. Cross the thresholds. Find the doorway. Claim what waits for you.”

This is it.
That is all.

Let me tell you something else.
I do not fear the dark.

*****

The first threshold there was.
The first I saw.
Was that of my bedroom.
If I was going to listen to mysterious boxes and keys and notes.
I knew that I must leave the settled landscape.
The stillness I had been ensconced in.
It would be there when I should need it.
If I should need it.

I left the lights off.
I let the quiet sing.
Standing in the doorway, I could feel the darkness pulse.
Nothing hiding.
All alive.
A voice I did not know I had, rose from within me.
What is the question?

I could not lay it out in words.
It was a fire of gold and light washing through me.
It was an ache for a knowing.
Solid and wild.
It was a steady step.
And a yes that sung so clearly that I would be pulled into a world where I could make it all so.
It was a how.
How?
How?
How?
That last one spoken out loud.
And then with a step.
I walked through.

Oh to tell you that there was suddenly magic and song.
That the world tilted and shook away my fears.
And in a flash, everything unspoken came to be.
But there was only my living room.
Waiting in the dark.

However.
I now had a question.
Which was more than I had before.
And I had a hope.
That the answer lay over another threshold.
